Josh Stanley Bio

Josh Stanley, CJF, AWCF, has been shoeing horses since 2005. In 2006 he graduated from the Montana State University Farrier School under Hall of Fame farrier, Tom Wolfe, CJF.  He apprenticed with Tom from 2008–2009, during which time Josh earned his Certified Farrier and Certified Journeyman Farrier degrees from the American Farriers Association.  In 2009 Josh began his business, Sunlight Forge.  In 2011 Josh joined a group of only a handful of Americans to become an Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers (UK).

Josh actively competes in horseshoeing contests around the US and internationally.  In 2013 and 2014, Josh earned a position on the American Farriers Team, representing the US at the International Team Championships in England.  In 2016 he became the American National Champion.  Josh also serves as a judge and clinician around the US, as well as internationally.  He was honored with an invitation to Japan in 2015, where he shared his skills and learned about traditional Japanese farriery and culture.

Josh is also an accomplished blacksmith and toolmaker, forging many custom farrier tools each year, including an array of fire tongs, creasers, punches, and hammers.  Every tool is handmade by Josh at his home shop and is designed through many years of experience for both contest and everyday use

Josh currently serves as the Manager of the American Farriers Team and a member of the AFA Rules committee. He enjoys working with a variety of breeds and disciplines, from performance horses to pleasure horses. He loves sharing his skills and knowledge in an effort to keep raising the bar for farriery in the US and around the globe.

Josh lives in Bozeman, MT, with his wife Melissa and their son, Flynn.  When he isn’t shoeing horses, Josh enjoys skiing, hunting, hiking, and riding horses through the mountains.
